Rasa Appreciation of original charcoal masterpiece
“Waiting for Beloved”
(Charcoal on cotton-rag hand-made paper, Pune 1986, Mumbiram)
This masterpiece is an example of an inspired work of an artist who has his very own hands-on approach to portrait-making with charcoal. Most of Mumbiram’s muses were from humble social backgrounds. However, invariably, Mumbiram saw them as Noble Protagonists from classical tales of noble deeds from the vast repertoire of classical personalities that Mumbiram harbored. It can be repeatedly said that appearing in the pictures of this artist was for the muses a meeting of two worlds. Here the forgotten ones took the centre stage.
This swarthy beauty undoubtedly has an engaging charm even though she does not fit in any stereotypical standard of classical Indian feminine beauty. She’s wearing a minuscule Bindi, an equally small nose stud and a little string of a necklace as her only ornaments. Yet we feel the very shape of her face is exquisite. Her dark eyes are captivating. We know some people go Gaga over noses but here we have ears that could be haunting a connoisseur about faces. She is handsome without any embellishments. She has ‘Laavanya‘.
This charcoal masterpiece has many things in common with some other Rasa masterpieces. For example, there are some light sketches in the background of the main charcoal figure. Mumbiram’s ‘After the Dance’ has such sketches that round out the narrative.
We are reminded of another masterpiece of Mumbiram: Abhisarika Kusum. A female deer is accompanying Kusum as she goes to meet her lover when the Full Moon is rising. We know Radha also has her own companion deer named Rangini. The Gopis of Vraja Vrindavan find camaraderie with the doe’s that are approaching Krishna. They are also attracted by his flute playing and his delectable sense of dressing. Mumbiram is invoking those noble images to conjure up the atmosphere as this humble Muse is waiting for her beloved somewhere on this hilltop.
This our protagonist is in the Vaasakasajjaa mood as she waits for Beloved to visit her at her chosen meeting place. She also has her companion deer to keep her company as she waits for her beloved. She will not be let down. We can already see her beloved negotiating the steep hillside in the distant background.
We are certain her beloved appreciates and enjoys her exquisitely shaped lips just as we appreciate a glimpse of this nonesuch beauty that Mumbiram has shared with us through this extraordinary rendering executed with virtuoso painterly skill. Whoever is treading glances with this lady of gentle spirit is sure to be transported into another world.
